Vicious Circle A Joe Pickett Novel C J Box Books

The past comes back to haunt game warden Joe Pickett and his family with devastating effect in this thrilling novel from #1 New York Times–bestselling author C. J. Box.
The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target.
The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he’d always wondered if there’d be a day of reckoning. He’s not wondering any longer. Joe knows they’re coming after him and his family now. He has his friend Nate by his side, but will that be enough this time? All he can do is prepare...and wait for them to make the first move.
Vicious Circle A Joe Pickett Novel C J Box Books
This is the 16th C.J. Box book I have read and have enjoyed them all (some more than others) but this one feels a little weak to me. Maybe there comes a time for every formula writer when "it's just time to crank another one out" for my publisher. It also includes a weak and unnecessary "red herring" sub-plot that gets wrapped up as a loose end at the very end of the book in a pretty lazy fashion. This book just kind of feels like it was "phoned in." If you are looking for an introduction to the Joe Pickett character, start at the beginning of this series. C.J. Box has created a wonderful Western character with a creative supporting cast. This one is a letdown but only one strike out of sixteen at-bats is still a pretty good percentage.Product details

Vicious Circle A Joe Pickett Novel C J Box Books Reviews
First off I have read every one of the Joe Pickett series, and I really liked them. But I found Vicious circle a little disappointing. In fact a little of a buzz kill. First Bud was Missy 4th husband, Earl Alden was her 5th. then Bud with Missy prodding him on killed Alden and hung him up on one of his own wind turbine blade's. Bud died later of a Brain tumor. He was a sweet man. So sorry Missy didn't get her comeuppance..
A long time fan of C.J. Box so I was shocked at how poorly this book was written. If I had read this book first I would never pick up another by this author. All his other works were fantastic. This doesn't match up. Skimming through now to get to the end and get over it.
Not up to par with other books. Not even close.
I love this series. When I finally read the first book a couple of years ago I was instantly hooked and, thanks to my , read every single book in the series within about 2 weeks.
I live in Wyoming and have to giggle at how he rearranges the countryside but the stories will give anyone an appreciation of life out here in the middle of nowhere. Although we don't have nearly as many murders as the books suggest. ;)
I have read my last Joe Pickett book, and I have read them all.
Maybe familiarity breeds contempt. It was just like the other ones but worse. The plot is strange. It seems to consist of incidents stitched together.
The book ends when Mr. Box has written enough pages to call it quits. If one has not read any of the Pickett books the characters are very thin.
There are loose ends in the plot. I fell sad that I am breaking up with Joe on such a down note but we are done.
Dallas Cates has a score to settle. After he and his two buddies, Rory Cross and Randall Luthi, are released from prison, they head back to Wyoming’s Twelve Sleep County in search of game warden Joe Pickett. The shady trio are joined by a young woman with tattoos on her neck who likes to disguise herself by wearing a hoodie.
Dallas soon finds himself in court and needs an attorney to help his defense. A man named Marcus Hand suddenly appears, a fellow who Joe Pickett calls the most infamous defense lawyer in the state of Wyoming. Hand’s fees are VERY expensive and one of several mysteries arises regarding who is paying these fees. It also turns out that Marcus Hand is married to Joe Pickett’s mother-in-law, Missy Vankueren. (How’s that for a mother-in-law problem?) There is a clever bit of writing in a scene when Missy, Joe’s wife Marybeth and Joe are having a drink and Joe mentally interprets several of Missy’s declarations. For example, Missy talked about one of her husbands and how they had a whirlwind courtship. Joe interprets this as follow She went to bed with him that night and left him begging for more with the tacit understanding that he wouldn’t receive the pleasure of her intimate company again until an immunity deal was placed before her for her signature.
Marcus Hand works his legal magic and Dallas is again roaming the countryside stirring up trouble. Meanwhile, Joe Pickett has an opportunity to visit a nearby woman’s prison and interview Brenda Cates who is the mother of Dallas. Seems like the Cates family has call types of unsavory citizens.
The excitement builds as Joe recognizes that his family is in jeopardy. Marybeth and their two children move to a safe place but, while Joe is away from home on duty, his house is burned down and several of his animals are destroyed. Even though Joe is a only game warden he has plenty of law enforcement skills and experience to see that justice is finally achieved.
I've read everything C.J. Box has written, even the individually published short stories. You could say I'm a big fan. I even met him once, a long time ago at the Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone, years before I read any of his books.
This is not his best effort. It's not the best effort of his publishing team either. He has two books coming out fairly close to each other. Maybe that's why they didn't give these books the time they deserve.
In one high intensity scene, the author refers to a character by the wrong name. The character actually steps over himself. In another scene, one character is referred to using a nickname that is only used by a certain person. That person is not in this book. In yet another scene, a character is referred to by the initials of his title, as if the initials were used during the writing process and he was given a name later.
It just seems like the editing was a bit sloppy. For a $14 ebook, I would have hoped for a much better job. The story is good, though the ending isn't quite as satisfying as most of his books.
I'll be back for more, but I will definitely consider going through the library instead of buying the book.
